Health Insurance Tips on World Diabetes Day

From an Insurance point of view, the following points are to be noted especially, if you are diabetic.

  1. While taking Health Insurance, please declare that you are diabetic otherwise your Insurance company will reject your Health Insurance claim, irrespective of the cause of the claim. Recently Covid Claim of one of my friends got rejected, stating that non-disclosure of material facts, in fact, the insurer had cancelled the policy also.

Thumb Rule: Assume that you are about to be hospitalised, you will definitely inform all the health conditions to doctor, the same need to be disclosed to the insurance company while taking the policy'

2. Check whether all PED's ( Pre Existing Diseases) are correctly mentioned in your policy, otherwise, get written clarification from your Insurance Company.

3. Choose the right policy based on the waiting period for PED's

There are Health Insurance Plans with 1 Year, 2 Year, 3 Year & 4 Year waiting periods. Choose wisely.

4. There are exclusive health insurance plans for Customers with diabetes that covers from day 1 subject to terms and conditions. The premium if such plans are on the higher side.

5. While increasing the Sum Insured of your existing Health Insurance, Pls declare your PEDs, (By default the Insurance company assumes that you are Healthy) Otherwise your Insurance claims in future may get rejected.

6. In case, you have taken insurance without declaring that you are Diabetic, please write a letter to the Insurance company and update them. The insurance company may accept your request, sometimes demands to pay an additional premium as loading, may impose an additional waiting period or sometimes may disagree to accept and cancel the policy. Ultimately you have the clarity that your policy is foolproof.

7. Before Hospitalisation, please have an open discussion with your Insurance advisor.

8. At any point of time, if your Health Insurance Claim is rejected unfairly, you may present your case to the Grievance Redressal Team of the Insurance Company, subsequently to the Insurance Ombudsman and Grievance cell of IRDA (INSURANCE REGULATORY AND DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY OF INDIA)
